One thing I’ve always wanted to do is visit Las Vegas’ Neon Boneyard - “a collection of non-restored historic signs [from the Vegas strip] outdoors on a 3 acre site in Las Vegas”. The entire concept is so kitschy cool that it’s irresistible to me.
Check out this Flickr set for a taste.
A quick note that Bear has confirmed the “re-launch” of Man Vs. Wild’s new season in early November:
We also filmed quite a bit of behind the scenes with the crew and safety team for Discovery Channel, to accompany the new Season that airs in early November.
Sweet!
Last Exit to Nowhere is:
… home to a collection of unique shirt designs which are inspired and pay homage to some of the most memorable places, corporations and companies in 20th century fiction – from the sunny shores of Amity Island (Jaws) to the frozen climes of Outpost #31 (The Thing).
For armchair travelers in every […]
Via Guardian Unlimited:
Nepal’s mountaineering authorities are calling for a ban on nudity and attempts to set obscene records on the world’s highest mountain, officials said yesterday.
Of everything I routinely read about Everest, I never realized that stripping was such a big social issue.
Last year, a Nepali climber claimed the world’s highest display of nudity when […]
Just a quick note that Michael over at Traveling-Stories-Magazine.com sent me an e-mail to announce a $125 travel writing contest he’s hosting.
What does it take to enter and win? Simply put, it takes a great, well written story. Some of your own promotion about your story always helps such as telling your friends, linking to […]

I’ll never complain about hopping the red line in Boston ever again.

I’m not even sure what to say about this one. Via InstaTravel:
Most people might not be aware of the fact that dining underwater is possible. But this is true! A new sub-aqua dining record has been made by an assorted crew of 500 people. TV presenter Adrian Chiles, Nigel Havers, James Dreyfus, Adrian Chiles […]
Another SiC stunner as always …

RoadJunky points us to an ABC Australia story about the world’s most expensive cup of coffee:
It’s the most exotic, rare and expensive coffee in the world. Kopi Luwack which comes from the dung of the Common Palm Civet or Luwack is so rare some believe it doesn’t exist.
Much of the coffee which can sell for […]
Yikes. Surprisingly enough, it didn’t crash or snap the landing gear completely.

MOSCOW - A 15-year-old boy from the Urals suffered acute frostbite after riding the wing of a Boeing-737 plane on a two-hour flight from Perm to Moscow, Russian radio station Mayak reported on Monday.
After clinging on for the entire 1300-kilometer (808-mile) flight to Vnukova Airport, the boy, named Andrei, collapsed onto the tarmac. His […]

too far? Or is there no clear-cut boundary at all?

I love kitsch. Especially cheesy, kitschy gifts that I can share with loved ones back home. Japan comes through in spades:
In Japan, restaurants often have front-window displays with foods from their menu, rendered in marvelous detail….in plastic.
…
Tokyo has a street near the Asakusa section called Kappabashi Dori, and it features every […]
OK, maybe it’s both. According to Gadling, the “sport” of glacial surfing is simple: “Head to a glacier, wait for the edge to fall off, and, when it does, ride the tidal wave on a surfboard as the ice chases you down.”
Right. Sounds like a cake walk.
The guy comes out like he just […]
Great news for U.S. backpackers looking for work in Australia, via Concierge.com:
If you or someone you know is hoping to pick up some casual work while backpacking around Australia, there’s good news: A new agreement between Australia and the U.S. will let Americans do just that. When I backpacked around Oz back in 2001, I […]
Rolf Potts on “the hum of possibility” that long term travel provides:
The “hum of possibility” is the feeling that anything can happen at any moment — a heady openness to the new and unexpected. It’s hard to experience this feeling at home, since home life is made more efficient and manageable by certain self-insulating patterns […]
Paul over at TravMonkey recently took the plunge (pun intended) on the world’s largest highwire bungy - the 134 meter Nevis Highwire Bungy in Queenstown.
I myself am afraid of heights. Not deathly afraid mind you, but enough that my knees get a bit wobbly and my sense of balance starts to misfire. I […]
Tired of stopping at sixteen different floors every time you use a hotel elevator? Here’s one simple trick every traveler should know.
A blunt bit of motivation to travel and squeeze every bit of juice out of life, as only Steve Jobs could put it:
“Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking that you have something to lose.”
- Steve Jobs, Stanford commencement 2005

Sure, you could probably snag a Ford Focus or some other street machine rental from Avis for $7US a day on your next vacation. But why not travel like you mean it?
John Chow points us to a $40,000 per day dream machine:

Imagine every traveler’s nightmare: everything you have is stolen. Do you have a backup?
Mark Kahler - an About.com Budget Travel columnist - recently posted Top 10 Free Things To Do In Europe. I haven’t personally visited any of these attractions/sights, so I’m not sure if these are really the top 10 things.
But I’m always a sucker for free and cheap travel goodies.
Slated to launch today, WeJetSet.com is a combined retailer and publication that claims to be “the store and voice of modern travel culture”. And they’re giving away a Mercedes to make certain that you believe it. Does anyone see a disconnect with this screenshot from their contest page?
Sounds like yet another uber-glossy e-zine […]
It’s been a while since I last did this little recap and it appears my blog continues to draw the freaky freaks out of the search engine woodwork. By far the most popular search term was some variation on “man vs. wild fraud”. That little flap evidently set the blogosphere all atwitter. […]

If you’re a diver or simply love all things aquatic, don’t miss The Discovery Channel’s Blue Planet TV series. I watched The Deep episode last night and sat for the first half-hour, mouth agape, staring in awe at some of the species the show’s crew found several miles below the ocean’s surface. […]
In Venezuela, evidently “dying” is not on that checklist. Via Reuters:
CARACAS (Reuters) - A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy.
Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy […]

On a deserted beach on a small island near the equator, there’s a barrel and some ziploc bags. This post office has been here for more than a hundred years. It was built by whalers who needed a way to get letters home to England. The idea was that the last stop […]
