Eliza, that's really interesting to hear, the way I heard it was that they weren't quite so blunt or direct about it, but ... what a shame. I guess (or hope) over time that most consumers/prospective travelers would actually be put off by such marketing, I know I would.
Lola - thanks! Great to hear :-)

"The official word is that travel agents don’t market doomsday tourism. "

Ha! Who told you that? I have experience creating promo materials for exactly this kind of trip (working in tandem with the company cited in that article, actually).

I felt fine about it, because it was actually ahead of the global warming curve (pre- Al Gore, etc.) ... but promoting travel didn't ultimately feel right because I knew that it was not sustainable. Everywhere we go, every train or plane we board, furthers the destruction of the planet. Which begs the question--where do we really NEED to go?

We can all afford to ask this question more often.

Good point, Chris. I've always thought the biggest compliment a travel writer can pay their favorite places is to leave them out of the guidebooks or not write articles about them - I've got a couple of those places!! So perhaps it's not just environmental change factors that are causing the problems, but also destinations which are simply becoming overcrowded because they're heavily promoted ...

Very interesting post Amanda! It actually makes me think of Cinque Terra Italy which has been popularized by Rick Steves and his "through the back door" books. What was once a nice out of the way fishing village (or villages)seems more and more over-run by tourists as the years go by and Steves becomes more popular. Because of this travelers (myself included) hurry to get there before the ambiance is completly destroyed. I guess you could say Steves is a bit of a natural disaster himself.
