Just some suggested reading for you...

If you haven't already read A Walk in the Woods (which you probably have by the sounds of your Appalachian Trail talk) I highly recommend it! A great read.

And, again, if you haven't already, be sure to pick up my friend Ted Simon's book, Jupiter's Travels. This documents his first trip around the world by motorcycle. You can read a review of this and other books that gave us inspiration on our full-time RV lifestyle blog.

Ted just recently released his new book that follows his repeat journey around the world nearly 30 years later, at the age of 70!

Cheers.
