Interesting article. As a website editor who has embraced the idea of tech travel (that's not meant to sound ironic) I've begun developing my own audio tours of sites and cities throughout Europe. I've had more than one customer who has used my downloadable tours from the comfort of home as a means to travel without actually leaving the couch.

Great article.

Speaking of technologies that facilitate world travel, are there any others besides Skype that you'd recommend?

How about the impact of GSM cell phones, text messaging or the iPod Nano, a tool that alone can document amazing travels, has had on travel? We don't always have to use tools custom-created for travel to connect while abroad. So many of the items we already carry on us do a great job in connecting us before our travels as well as during.

I'd say tech has also made it easier for travel deals and news to spread. Not just the lucky few know about deals, making it more affordable for anyone who wants to pick up and go.

[...] How Technology Is Indelibly Changing the Ways in Which We Travel When Google Street View recently hit the roads of my native Canada, it blew my mind. Here I was, sitting 6,426 kilometers away at my desk in Aarhus, Denmark staring at my green aging front door in Toronto, Ontario, as if the time and space between us was a figment of my imagination. As I peered into my laptop’s glass screen, looking for hints of familiarity, I was struck with a feeling of unease. http://www.vagabondish.com [...]

I am always amazed at how great our lives have become. We can be and do anything we want, anywhere we want.

You mention the changes in the last century, but I think it is must shorter than that. The changes in the last decade have been huge. When I first came to Japan about 12 years ago, the Internet was in its infancy. No one was blogging. There was little travel information. No discount airlines. No wi-fi Internet access. Travelers didn't carry laptop computers. It was much more difficult to earn money in other countries. What a difference a decade makes!

These are amazing times. We really are lucky to be alive and traveling in this age.
