I was just thinking about this yesterday: Discovery Channel did a whole one hour episode of Extreme Engineering (I think?) on that very concept.  The science behind it said that it would be possible to get from NYC to London in like 45 minutes or some ridiculously minute slice of time.  Really fascinating stuff ...</description>
