She looks good for her age, and is definitely more popular now than when she first came on the scene. Sydney Opera House, Australia’s most famous building, has just turned 40 years old. When first unveiled, the contemporary design attracted ridicule and derision. Now she’s a treasured icon of the Sydney cityscape.

An all-star line-up of musicians performed at the anniversary gala, with members of the Danish royal family on hand to mark the occasion. Sydney Opera House was designed by Danish architect Jorn Utzon, and opened in 1973.
