I am a zoo professional and consultant. Emu's can be slow but are capable of a great turn of speed and tend to zig zag so are not as easy to catch as one would imagine. They are also capable of a very strong and painful kick.
I hate the idea of the taser or the handcuffs being used. Two or three people who knew what they were doing could have cornered and captured.

Actually... Emus can be quite a handful when they feel threatened. They have wicked claws on their feet (think of that thing on the movie Jurrassic park). They are not an animal to mess with. If the officers had to taser it for safety (its and/or their own)... The handcuffs.. yeah I wouldn't want to be anywhere near those feet when that thing wakes up.

A cop in Houston was almost killed by one of those recently.
