Mexican woman have been offered a reprieve from the unwelcome attention of Lotharios. A new ‘women’s only’ bus service just rolled out in this, one of the world’s largest cities, complete with pink signs in the front and back.

Every year, close to 22 million people squeeze themselves into Mexico City’s crowded buses and subways, creating plenty of opportunity for grabby perverts. Many women resort to ingenious safety measures like a safety pin to fend off roaming hands, but now city authorities have finally stepped in to make traveling less stressful for the ladies.

The service seems to be a grand success, and there are plans to bring in fifteen more routes to add to the present three already in service.

Run along now pervs, nothing to grope here.

  1. I wrote about this issue as well, but I discovered in my background research that the overcrowded buses are a danger in other ways too. Not surprisingly, pick pocketing and theft are also common problems.

It’s great that Mexico City is moving to protect women, but I wonder if something could be done to improve the safety and security of the system in general?
