Beautiful article. Small correction though:

"After the parachute ejected, briefly thrusting us upwards almost as suddenly as we had dropped, we drifted down."

This sensation is psychological in nature and is caused by the sudden change in velocity and the fact that the parachute is essentially "pulling" upwards on your body against your speed towards the ground, which causes quick deceleration.

In reality, you don't move "up" at all relative to the ground (in other words, you don't gain any height). Once you have acclimated to the new speed, it feels like you are once more drifting down, when in reality, you were always moving downwards.

Fantastic blog, so well written. It gave me goosebumps and brought back many memories for me. We also took the plunge and jumped in Queennstown, my boyfriend never keen but now looks back on it as one of the best experiences off his life, I feel the same. You can read our story at http://www.twillet.com/2008/12/skydiving-in-queenstown/

".. a qualified tandem instructor who had performed this feat without incident numerous times before."

It seems there are two kinds of instructors: (1) the kind you mention above and (2) the dead kind - the kind "with incident".

No? =P
