A 100-year old tree on the outskirts of Brussels is likely (could there be a contender?) the world’s most talkative, most socially networked tree. All thanks to EOS magazine, who decided to hook it up to:

… a fine dust meter, ozone meter, light meter, weatherstation, webcam and microphone. This equipment constantly measures the tree’s living circumstances. And translates this information into human language. Then, the tree lets the world know how he feels.

The website – Talking-Tree.com – is updated automatically with simple declarations about the tree’s current mood (“I’m OK.”) and activity (“Having a Sip of Water.”). You can even follow the tree’s updates on Facebook and Twitter.

It’s perhaps one of the cleverest uses of social networking I’ve ever seen. It is a touch depressing however to think that a tree could potentially have more Twitter followers than me.
