Swallows & Amazons is absolutely wonderful! We used to read it aloud in my family when I was younger. Definitely a great book to inspire the explorer within you.

Ooh... Great list! Swallows & Amazons was a favourite book of mine growing up, too. I looked forward to being old enough to go off on parent-free sailing adventures of my own... though I'm not sure even now I would trust my own experience there. I also agree with you about George Orwell. I find his non-fiction more subtle than his novels, and it appeals to me more than they do now. Down & Out is a perennial favourite. I'll be sure to check out the Hemingway and the Lessing (you make them sound fabulous, and I'm not much of a Hemingway fan), and as for Alistair McLeod, there's a copy of that very book sitting on my bookshelf, just waiting to be read.
