In the article yoiu didn't mention a frontloading backpack -- a real shortcoming since they are much more handy.

Overall, this is pretty accurate, though I would say those "big tube" backpacks are a royal pain for a traveler. They're meant more for hikers and expedition people. The best ones for travelers are those that open with a front zipper that allows you to get to everything. You can get them from Osprey, Eagle Creek, Kelty---most of the companies that equip travelers. Also, many of these allow you to zip the straps behind a flap and carry them like a suitcase, which eliminates the straps problem when checking a bag. And 70 liters is plenty, no matter how long the trip!

I think having a front-loading backpack is almost essential - the vast majority of brands are top loading, which means if you need to get to stuff at the bottom it's pretty tricky, even on toploaders that have front access via one of the front pockets, as I discovered on my last trip.

Dude, I don't even need a bag right now and this article makes me want to buy one and go somewhere with it. I guess that's a compliment? Cheers.

Nah, I checked out Craig's article and it is a very good write up. He has been traveling for a while and has some experience and valuable advice when it comes to backpacks.

One type of bag that is seriously lacking in the USA is a panel-loading or front-loading style backpack. Kelty makes a great one, which I mentioned here:

... Been loving it since.

yeah, I'm a beginner backpacker myself...but from what I've heard, it seems what you wrote is pretty accurate. I always hear "no matter how big your bag is, you'll always fill it up." haha.
