The 48 people who were on the ride when it was stopped were evacuated before the investigation began. Some among the crowds of people lined up to ride The Smiler, which has a record-setting 14 loops, said that they saw metal break off and leave a gap in the track. The ride was stopped immediately and closed as a precaution until the coaster could be thoroughly inspected.
