Underwater Hotel

Visitors to Istanbul will soon have a chance to view the most spectacular ocean views on the planet. A seven floor, seven-star hotel is being built underwater on what was formerly a tobacco factory. There will be exhibition halls, and restaurants, and all rooms will be sea facing.

This isn’t the first such underwater hotel complex in the world. That honor goes to the $500 million Poseidon Hotel which is currently being built off Fiji. The Istanbul hotel differs in that it is being built under the city center, which should make for an interesting experience.

The hotel’s inauguration is set to coincide with the city’s taking over from Linz, Austria as the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010.

    Apparently the visibility underwater there is only about 10 feet… so what’s the point of being underwater if you can’t see anything. Kind of stupid if you ask me…

    “What wonder place do we have for the super rich” Well lets see theres the cultural mecca known as NYC. The new WTC is supposed to be awesome. Theres the ski resorts in aspen. Theres a number of island retreats on the east coast and theres of course the state of Hawaii. Theres San Fran and LA both of which are cultural meccas. People don’t move here for nothing, but I will concede one thing a lot of the awesome things that we have built here in the past couldn’t be built today cause of the current laws and bs. Also I think we should be more concerned about the cost of energy then about building some crap for the rich.

    All that said that is an awesome hotel and a modern marvel assuming they quake proofed it enough other wise bring your air tank.

Istanbul has been a culturally important city for millennia because it sits on one of the most vital saltwater straits connecting Europe and Asia! The Black Sea to Marmara to the Aegean to the Mediterranean…These may not be oceans, but they’re the saltwater at the heart of human civilization.

    My husband and I were in Istanbul 9 months
    ago. We loved the city, but the water was
    extremely polluted. I actually saw a huge brown mass of ? which a large ship dumped
    on its way out of the bay. They do not
    control their waterways very well. It is
    dangerous to swim in the water, so I doubt
    if the view is spatular to say the least.

    You wake up and tou see the deadliest creature in sea.. No not sharks, just plastic bottles and car tires… Beleive me in istanbul underwater sight distance is less than 3 meters (10 feet). We have a very polluted sea….

    I hope the staff is screened EXTREMELY thoroughly. I also hope that security looks as every single piece that goes into this underwater hotel.

    Terrorists are no longer looking at “hard” targets to attack, they are now attack “soft” targets, like a mall, or, of course, an underwater hotel.

    I don’t want to sound like an alarmist, again, I just hope they take the safety of the hotel, its staff and visitors alike, very, very seriously.

    Depending on the pricing hopefully I’ll stay there eventually.

    This is total BS as is the Poseidon in Fiji and Hydropolis in Dubai. Each of these hotels have been promised to be opening in the next 1-2 yr but they haven’t even been started. The only underwater hotel is Jules Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, FL which has been around since 1986.

    I live in istanbul, i know its a good investment for the city and all but to be honest, bosphorus does not have an underwater view people would want to see, its not coral reefs or anything and not because its dirty but because of the soil and the current the visibility at bosphorus is probably the same with river thames which makes this a really bad idea…

    Amazing! It would be awesome to stay there for acouple of nights but i heard its $2,000 a night! Wowza! But I guess you get what you pay for :D

    Imagine staying there, that would be awesome! I’ve seen a few that offer semi-submerged rooms, but this one looks like it’s going to be totally different that most of them. Would be great to see a follow-up and the progress they’ve made on it. Really neat!

    GOD CREATED THE SEA FOR A REASON. WE PEOPLE WE NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE OF OUR ACT BY DESTROYING THE UPPER GROUND. NOW, WE ARE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER TARGET. SHAME ON US. RESPECT THE PRIVACY OF THOSE CREATURES UNDER THE SEA. WHAT WOULD BE THE NEXT PROJECT???

    I would stay in the resort of that kind if it will be built on the ship. That would be an awesome cruise.

    The view would be amazing… but this picture is from poseidon undersea resort, they are also creating one in Itsanbul but they don’t have any ‘out there’ imsges- and due to Istanbul’s seas being polluted the veiw may not be as amazing as we want believe :,(… nonetheless I want to go to the poseidon undersea resort or the tropilos in Dubia (borth underwater)… Will be amazing! :O

    Very close to the coral, just imagine how much reef they had to destroy to build the rooms so close to the view. Man is so irresponsible with the planet. The view is beautiful but with the massive amounts of coral reefs dying in our life time this disturbance of underwater life for a hotel is an atrocity.
