I think everyone has the right to explore nature whether they're 23, 80, work at Starbucks or make $700K a year. Having said that, I think the ease of exploring many national parks has opened up the doors to bigger crowds. You can solve some of these problems by banning RVs in national parks, taking electrical hookups out of campgrounds and not paving any trails. That alone would probably cut visitors down by 50% but then again if there weren't as many visitors, would the national parks have money for protecting wildlife?

I 100% agree. I don't mind so much the characteristics of them, but more the smugness and sheer number of annoying comments that they give.

Great article, and I've got nothing but similar experiences. I've met hikers who openly scorned me for not wearing a North Face jacket. And one guy laughed at me for not eating an MSR meal. But the best I heard was of an Australian who was hiking the Milford Sound and pressed the locator beacon halfway through because he was tired and wanted to quit. Wha?

I would really appreciate a quiz to help me identify whether or not I am, in fact, a yuppie. Here are the facts:

I've shopped at REI. I work in an office. I love my GPS and am crap using a compass. I won't go on a trip without serious amounts of sunblock of some sort.

However, I lived in the California foothills for a few years. I am no stranger to sweating up a storm, pitching a tent and starting a fire. I have a pretty good grasp on what to do to not annoy wildlife or harm the places I visit.

Little help? :)
