The Incredible Shrinking Dollar: Amsterdam Turning Away U.S. Currency

If you wanted a reality check about the actual state of the beleaguered U.S. dollar, you might want to head to Amsterdam where small currency exchange firms are turning away dollars.

The US currency has fallen badly against the Euro with one Euro currently worth roughly $1.58. Tourists looking to exchange their dollars have to head to larger exchanges at the Post Office. The smaller firms simply don’t want to risk being stuck with currency that could dwindle in value by the time they are sold.

This comes soon after Indian tourist authorities announced the dollar was no longer welcome at the Taj Mahal. With the value against the rupee falling fast over the past few months, authorities have decided to wash their hands off what was once the world’s most coveted currency.

The almighty U.S. dollar. Who would have thunk?

I just returned from Amsterdam and the exchange rate was indeed painful. However, while it doesn’t hurt to bring a small amount of cash to exchange, I was able to save myself some of the hassle by using ATMs and credit cards. There are credit cards that do not charge fees for use overseas - just one less expense to worry about.
