Every now and then we hear about bomb scares, which are always a worry at airports and for good reason. Recently we reported on an incident where a rock star was given a gold-leafed, decommissioned grenade as a gift, which he absentmindedly packed in his luggage for the flight home, resulting in chaos at the airport.

You might expect this sort of thing from flaky or overpartied celebs, or ignorant rednecks. About the last profession you’d suspect– except perhaps for bomb squad technicians themselves– of being prone to such boneheadedness is the military.

Well now it’s their turn to have egg on their faces. Numerous vehicles were rented for an Australian Army training exercise for soldiers that involved detecting threats. Unfortunately some of the threats went undetected, and a car was returned to the rental lot at Sydney airport with fake bombs still hidden in the glove compartment. They were discovered later and the terminal was locked down while the bomb squad was called in.
