It must be great to be a queen–especially when your country may officially name a prized landmark in your honor.

British lawmakers want to change the name of Big Ben to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee (60 years on the throne). At the present time, Big Ben does not have an official name. If the bill to officially name the clock tower is passed, it will be in time for the Jubilee celebrations in June.

Queen Elizabeth II will be the second queen to reach Diamond Jubilee status. The first queen to mark 60 years was Queen Victoria, who is honored by the tower at the Palace of Westminster.

More details on the landmark’s potential new name, can be found here.

  1. The tower housing Big Ben is to be renamed the Elizabeth Tower in honour of the Queen, the House of Commons has confirmed.

Big Ben is one our most recognisable tourist attractions and in 2008 was voted UK’s favourite landmark.

We like the Queen, but think that renaming Big Ben is one of the stupidest ideas we have ever heard. Let’s build a new tower, or rename a less important belfry, or perhaps MPs should concentrate on saving us from economic annihilation rather than whipping votes for the unnecessary rebranding of one of our most famous monuments.

So, join us in voting to Save Big Ben.
