Canadians Resort to U.S. Border-towns for Reduced Flights

For Canadians living near the U.S. border, one of the cheapest flight options to the U.S. has been driving there first. Case in point–since 2004, Allegiant Travel has offered service out of Bellingham, Wash. just an hour south of Vancouver, B.C. Allegiant found that over half of their passengers were coming from Canada.

Taxes are to blame for the sharp contrast in U.S.-bound flights from Canada–sometimes as high as four times the price of a ticket from a border-town destination. Both countries are looking for solutions to the “migration”, but for the time being, making the drive to the U.S. seems to be the best option for many Canadians.

More details on the northern migration can be found at the Wall Street Journal.
