East River Waterfalls to be Unveiled in July

According to Gothamist, the East River waterfalls project is scheduled to come to New York in July. The $15 million project consists of 4 man made waterfalls, each measuring between 90 feet and 120 feet and constructed over scaffolding to give it the appearance of a building under construction.

Each of the four waterfalls will be installed at fours separate spots along the shores of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Governor’s Island. They will flow from 7 am to 10 pm every day of the week, and will be lit after sunset.

To offset environmental concerns, project organizers have said they will use special LED lighting and tidal current powered pumps to operate the falls. The installation of the waterfalls is slated to cap off the Olafur Eliasson retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, and the project is being financed by the Public Art Fund.

According to Mayor Bloomberg, the waterfalls will be “as awe inspiring as any found in nature.” Really.
