To Westerners, summer treats mean ice cream, watermelon and popsicles. To the Japanese, it’s broiled eel.

This week ushers in the Midsummer Day of the Ox in Tokyo, otherwise known as Unagi no Hi, or “Eel Day.” The eel is prepared over a charcoal grill and served golden brown over rice in a rectangular lacquerware box. Pretty fancy for a summertime treat right? Sadly, the price of eel is rising due to decreased supply, so unagi lovers need to enjoy the treat while it’s still reasonable.
