Every year, thousands of breeders from all over the world compete in the Olympics of orchid competitions–the World Orchid Conference.

The Conference offers a glimpse of the world of orchid breeding, and the unique cultivars specifically bred for world competition.

Most of the 50,000 orchids from 5,000 varieties on display at the conference do not occur in the wild; they are hybrids, created by people who have cross-fertilized orchid species, often from far-flung lands.

The winning entry at last November’s conference in Singapore came from Taiwan, with two runners-up entries from the United Kingdom and Papua New Guinea.

Read on for more about the world’s orchid breeders in February’s issue of the Smithsonian magazine.
