It was like ancient times in Rome yesterday when police tried to remove costumed centurions and gladiators from the Colosseum.

During a demonstration two men climbed up to the second tier of the 2,000-year-old Colosseum to protest a recent city council decision which prevents them from working at the site posing for photos and asking tourists for money.

When police attempted to carry the two protestors away, fellow costumed supporters intervened and a scuffle broke out. Paramedics took one of the centurions to hospital after he fell during the confrontation.

Over the years, the city has gone back and forth on enforcing its policy against the fake warriors. Last month, Rome’s city council decided to keep them away from the Colosseum, although they still can work at other sites, like the Trevi Fountain or Piazza Navona.

  1. what the hell? why? Why has to forbid something who really enjoy tourists and which should instead be seen as a service not as rip off!
I myself made the pictures with themwhat the hell? why? Why has to forbid something who really enjoy tourists and which should instead be seen as a service not as rip off!
I myself made the pictures with them at the Coliseum. They were very kind and not at all pushy. They even gave me lots of tourist information.
I really do not understand why a city so unique and fascinating as Rome should have a Mayor that instead of helping the tourism he does everything to prevent it! Even the Italian bureaucracy and individual regions complicates things.
I was discussing about this kind of problem also with the owner of the bed and breakfast I stayed for a week during my last holiday in Rome. She told me that they had many limitations, some very exaggerated. Not to mention the poor Italians taxes!
I want to recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone looking for accommodation in Rome, downtown, clean, nice and comfortable.
The name of the B and b is “Brilli and it is very close to the Colosseum. Metro stop also is very close, less than 50 mt. The rooms are very nice and really cheap. Excellent value for money! this is the website address: http://www.bbbrilli.com
