GPS Technology Helps Visitors Trace the Berlin Wall

Visitors to Berlin are often disappointed to find few remaining traces of the Berlin wall, and no delineation between the eastern and western parts of the city. When the wall came down, most of it was sold, frustrating history buffs who might otherwise want to visit the forbidding structure that symbolized the difference between two ideologies.

Now, a multimedia hand-held device called MauerGuide promises to allow visitors a chance to take a walking tour along the path where the wall once stood.

The device includes a mini computer and a head set, both hooked to a GPS system that traces the path along where the wall stood and informs visitors of where along the wall they are. For now, the guide is available in German and English, but there are plans to introduce it in other languages too.
