Moving a 340-ton boulder from a quarry 60 miles away from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), should be easy right? “Levitated Mass” a new installation from Michael Heizer, began as a journey to find the perfect boulder decades before the 11-day haul from the quarry. Heizer found his perfect specimen in 2005. It was another long and arduous journey over the last year to get the rock in place at the LACMA.

When “Levitated Mass” opens on June 24, visitors will get to walk under the boulder with the illusion that the rock is levitating. The installation will be located in the parkland outside the museum and will be open to non-museum patrons.

A sketch of the installation and more details on how it arrived at the museum can be seen at NPR.org
