A team of art researchers and scientists may have uncovered a 500 year old mystery–on a wall at Florence’s city hall building.

The team behind the “Lost Leonardo” project believe that a lost Leonardo da Vinci fresco is hiding behind said wall. Using medical-style endoscopic probes and other high-tech tools, the team has been extracting samples for further testing.

We found traces of pigments that appear to be those known to have been used exclusively by Leonardo, said Maurizio Seracini, an engineer and expert in art diagnostics who has been on the trail of the ‘Lost Leonardo’ for three decades. These data are very encouraging, he said, adding that one black pigment found was believed to be of the same type used by Leonardo on the Mona Lisa.

Italy’s culture ministry is left to decide the next steps on continuing the investigation. Further information can be found at Reuters.
