A hotelier in Austria used his military training to survive being stuck in the elevator of his own hotel for four days. Thomas Fleetwood, owner of Hotel Eden was doing a final inspection of the hotel before it opens when he became trapped in the property’s one-person elevator. Fleetwood had left his mobile phone in the hotel office and therefore could not call for help. He was discovered after four days by a friend making a delivery who noticed several days’ mail had accumulated and used a spare key to go inside the empty hotel and check on Fleetwood.

Having received survival training with the Swedish military, Fleetwood broke a small window in the elevator so that fresh air could get in. He also attempted to escape through the roof of the car, but was unsuccessful and so he waited calmly to be rescued. He was examined at the hospital and found to be in good health after firefighters extracted him from the broken elevator.
