There may be mobile apps for everything under the sun, but I am not aware of anyone having developed one to prevent a polar bear attack. Nevertheless, a Canadian man credits his cell phone with saving his life.

Garett Kolsun was walking to his Churchill, Manitoba home at 1:30 in the morning when a polar bear charged him. He tried to run away from the bear but found nowhere to take refuge, so he changed tactics and ran around unpredictably, waving his arms, and shouting for help. Kolsun tried to kick down the door of a local business in the hope of hiding inside, but he was unsuccessful and became cornered by the polar bear.

The bear had already bitten Kolsun and taken several swipes at him with its claws when he embarked on a last-ditch effort to escape. Kolsun turned on his phone and waved it in the bear’s face. The momentary diversion of the bear’s attention was enough to allow him to escape and run away. He found a house to hide in before the polar bear caught up.
