With Gracenote.com’s Music Map you can zoom in on countries around the world to find out what folks are listening to.

I’m not entirely sure how this is useful to travelers, other than to determine the rather eclectic musical tastes of locals in the countries you’re planning to visit. Let’s take a quick tour, picking five countries at random:

Malaysians really dig the eclectic mix of Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne, and Mariah Carey - in that order.

Saudi Arabians like The Beatles, Mariah Carey, and The Rolling Stones.

(What’s with the interest in Mariah Carey? Note to self: perhaps I can use this to determine which countries adore her and cross those off of my RTW to-do list.)

Belgians on the other hand like things a little more my speed: U2, The Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Pink Floyd.

Now we’re getting somewhere.

Estonians really rock out with Linkin Park, Metallica, Queen, Terminator, System of a Down, and Rammstein.

Final note: if musical taste represents any semblance of what to expect in a given country, might want to bring a helmet to Estonia.

Wow, 5 out of the top 10 artists listed under the Philippines are local. Interesting. But damnit, why is Mariah Carey there?!

Oh you have no idea. Growing up in Vietnam was like growing up in a teenage Mariah Carey fan’s bedroom. And Air Supply. The place was rife with Air Supply. And if you’ve never heard of Michael Learns to Rock, you’re lucky.

Nina: It seems no country is safe from her ear-splitting, glass-cracking, opera-esque voice.

Preya: C’mon! Air Supply. You’re going to sit there with a straight face and tell me that “All Out of Love” isn’t one of the greatest contributions to musical history ever?
