National Coal Museum Now Powered by Solar Energy

The Big Pit National Coal Museum in England recently installed 200 solar panels to help power its energy needs. The museum will save roughly $650,000 over the next quarter century on it energy bill.

The museum, which was originally a working coalmine from 1810 to 1980, ceased production, remained dormant and eventually opened as a museum to the public in 2003. There are around 300 feet of old tunnels for visitors to experience claustrophobia first hand, and UNESCO has bestowed the National Heritage label on the site as well.

We’re not sure how it’s been powering itself since it reopened, but it seems the future of this coal museum is a bright one.
