Odd Travel Gifts: Plastic Japanese Food

I love kitsch. Especially cheesy, kitschy gifts that I can share with loved ones back home. Japan comes through in spades:
In Japan, restaurants often have front-window displays with foods from their menu, rendered in marvelous detail….in plastic.
…
Tokyo has a street near the Asakusa section called Kappabashi Dori, and it features every kind of kitchen and restaurant gear you could ever want. The best news, though, is that you can also go there to buy all sorts of plastic food: rice in bowls, tempura, gyoza (potstickers) and noodle dishes are only some of the foods available.
And yes, Mom: that does mean you’re getting a stack of plastic four cheese pizzas from me!

Hi Mike, thanks for the link to the Tokyo post.
I’ve lived in RI (have a quahog stuffie and a Del’s Lemonade for me!) and think your RTW idea is great.
Can’t do much for you on the Canada leg, but may know some folks along the Appalachian Trail, and have some ideas for Europe and Asia as well.
Best of luck to you….

The pleasure’s mine, Sheila. I’m an avid reader of PT.
And I know you’re a true RIer when you mention stuffies and Del’s. It’s like our secret handshake here. =)
Thanks for the kudos. I can’t wait to get started on my trip!
