A portion of the East Side Gallery, a 1.3km section of the historic Berlin Wall which is emblazoned with famous murals, is slated to be demolished to make way for the construction of a condominium complex.

The prospect of losing this piece of cultural heritage has bewildered and angered many, but according to an article in The Guardian the district’s mayor and MP, Franz Schulz, has said that “The investor has a right to demand this, so we’ll have to do it” in reference to removing sections of the gallery for the construction of the Living Levels condo project.

The East Side Gallery currently brings approximately 800,000 tourists to visit the district every year.

  1. I highly doubt this will actually happen. They’ve already had to cancel or alter a number of their ambitious plans for this waterfront area of Berlin due to strong community opposition and I can’t see even a small part of one of the few remaining sections (and the most famous section) of the wall being demolished.
