Startup Gives Views of What Places Are Really Like

Let’s be honest. How much text of the average guidebook or review do you really read? We like to pretend to be uber-sophisicated, but humans gravitate toward pictures. I bet you’re not even reading this right now. You’re probably looking at those photos of Venice beneath this paragraph. This is what startup Wanderlane is banking on.

They have created a website designed to facilitate exploration of a place through photos. You could go on Yelp or TripAdvisor and read about someone else’s experience at a restaurant, but on Wanderlane, which aggregates images from the Internet, the idea is that you can see from the photos what the lighting is like, how the food is presented, what sort of people go there, and whether the decor suits your taste.

It’s an interesting concept that incorporates some of the randomness and thrill of discovery of Pinterest, with more of a focus on discovering places to go. So far I’m finding Wanderlane less informative and more random than perhaps is useful, but it could be worth keeping an eye on.

  1. Agree. They have a lot of pretty pics on Wanderlane but it would be more useful if when you scrolled over a photo it would tell you what it was, where and a review.
