Songkran, also known as Thai New Year, just wrapped up four days of celebrations.

Some celebrations will continue on throughout the week, but the biggest component of the festivities are the water fights. Huge water fights occur throughout the streets of Chiang Mai and tourist areas like Silom and Khao San Road. But the story behind the fights are simple–water is meant to wash away bad luck. Many revelers pour water over Buddha statues to accentuate this belief.

You’ll have to wait another year to take part in the water fights of Songkran, but keep this tip in mind: use only clean, cold water. More on Thai New Year can be found at CNNGo.com
