With all of the attention and hoopla surrounding Tourism Australia’s Best Jobs in the World campaign, a British newspaper has chosen to make the counterpoint and speculate on what might be the world’s worst jobs in travel.

Their final list includes unenviable posts such as having to clean the lavatories on trains in India, or being the publicity manager for Ryanair (whose responsibilities are remarkably similar come to think of it.)

While I probably couldn’t cut it as a flight attendant on a Friday night flight to Ibiza, having worked in travel for over a decade, I still think one of the worst jobs in the industry is the person who has to phone up passengers to inform them of airline schedule changes. Though if you enjoy listening to profanity and invective, it could be just the position for you.

  1. Haha. I’ve worked for a major budget airline and a cruise line and I can attest that airline ticket agents have it bad. At least if you’re a reservations agent, you only have to get yelled at over the phone…the folks at the ticket counter (or lost luggage office) get to experience the joy of getting yelled at in person.

But they get to fly for free whenever they like…so it’s a small price to pay, I’d say.
